DESTINYS CHILD – “Survivor”
For a song that seems simple and repetitive, “Survivor” is rammed with hooks. Perhaps the least-remembered but most telling one comes a couple of minutes in, moments before Michelle Williams attempts to wrap a positive homily around the song’s unfettered will to power. “Whoa-oh” sings Beyoncé, and the other girls replicate it, and then pass little melismatic drills back and forth, repeating one another precisely. It’s a segment of abstract but perfect vocal choreography that works as a ritual of unity, a demonstration of the unbreakable closeness of Destiny’s Child. Which needs demonstrating, of course, since the song is generally taken to be a massive fuck-you to the band’s former members.
Its origins are the least attractive thing about “Survivor”. So far as we know, LeToya and LaTavia quit the group because they were sick of the dominance of the Knowles family onstage and behind the scenes. No doubt it pissed the remaining members off, but whether you frame the split as a bid for freedom or (as here) an act of sabotage, the departed pair were achieving no very great success afterwards. And once you know “Survivor” is about them, it can sound grossly disproportionate, a hellstorm of self-righteous fire unleashed for the pettiest of reasons. The song takes some pains to be transferable – “Now that you’re out of my life I’m so much better” could easily be aimed at a friend or lover. So could the rest of the lyric – most of it, anyhow: by the time Beyonce gets onto her sales figures the mask is slipping. And “Survivor”’s route to healing also fits a broken contract better than a broken heart. As the music falls away, we’re left with the backing vocals and their Stakhanovite chant: “WORK…WORK…WORK…WORK…”
As Laurie Anderson put it, when love is gone, there’s always justice. Not much justice here, you might say. But when justice is gone, there’s always force. And “Survivor” has force to spare. The track’s ever-cycling synth riff sets the tone – half church organ, half get-in-the-ring intro music. Behind it a newton’s cradle of snares is set in motion, an incessant, trebly, treadmill of percussion set over the beat. The impression is of relentless discipline, and the vocals confirm it. This era’s singles – “Independent Women” and “Bootylicious” too – are as churchy as modern R&B gets, building songs out of pulpit-ready rhetoric and aerobic call-and-response routines. “Survivor” is the finest example. The constant lyrical pattern, the chain of “thought I…but I….” is overwhelming. Even if a couple of the individual pieces lack inspiration (“Thought I couldn’t last without you, but I’m lasting”) it hardly alters the crushing effect. This is Beyoncé at her steeliest, her imperious side coming to full view. In future she’ll use it as part of her public persona, showing it on record only in flashes and glints. Here it powers the song.

What does this emergence mean for the other members of Destiny’s Child? They’re caught up in the flood: there is no space left by the vocals on “Survivor”, no moment to breathe, no gap for the beat. Kelly Rowland gets to play the superego to Beyoncé’s unleashed id, turning fury into deliciously insincere forgiveness. Her words are pure smarm – “Not gonna compromise my Christianity” – but the venom is all in the way she sings them, tight, purse-lipped runs of syllables punctuated by a barked “I’m better than that!” from her bandmates. It’s hilarious, and the contrast between Beyoncé’s wrath and Kelly’s poisoned graciousness is a perfect synopsis of how people act when they cut off a friend.
(Plus, it’s capped by the record’s funniest line. “Diss you on the Internet” sounded awkward then and now, but older media rarely manage to acknowledge newer media gracefully: besides, the Internet returned the compliment by turning the phrase into a meme.)
A point of comparison: for Gloria Gaynor, surviving was a decision you take, a positive choice in the face of abuse or adversity. For Destinys Child, survival is that too, but it’s also innate: a survivor is what you are, not what you do. The idea of “the fittest” hangs over the song (and not just because it’s becoming ever-clearer whose band this is). “Survivor”’s cyborg gospel takes this Darwinian impulse and wreaths it with an implied morality: Beyoncé survives because she is in the right. In this, the song reflects the emergent politics of its time as well as “I Will Survive” chimed with the liberation philosophies of the 1970s. You’re a survivor, because you’re gonna work harder. Survival is always deserved. As for the others? Let God sort it out.
Through that lens, “Survivor” is a horrible song. Sometimes it makes me flinch. But it’s also magnificent. There’s so much life to it, such drive – especially set against the will-this-do dreariness of British pop at the time. And that movement and life makes “Survivor” transcend its bitter inspiration and work not just as an intra-band kiss-off but as a cold blast against any false friend, liar or abuser who might cross your path. What pop does better than anything else does is to take feelings and situations, and crush and simplify them, making them immediate and thrilling and useful. It applies no moral filter. People feel self-righteous and wrathful, and so ultimately pop will product songs that are diamonds of self-righteousness and wrath. This is one of them: a church-inspired song that celebrates the dark joy of excommunication.

The Tale of House Kensington
There is debate as to who truly founded the family of Kensington. An old family, the Kensingtons were known for their bright blond hair and fearsome confidence. Three members are thought to have founded the family: the ruthless warrior Robert, the cunning trickster Devin, and Robert’s own daughter, Paristasia.
Robert was the son of a war-chief whose tribe traveled north and south with the changing of the seasons. Where his father favored brutal pillaging of villages and farms, Robert preferred to keep his blades and men sharp; prepared for the biggest targets – castles. Any villages they came across, they’d be open for trade and services. This made things easier when it came to keeping weapons and health up to par. It even opened up opportunities for those who wanted adventure in the villages or to seek great wealth. A few prominent blacksmiths even traveled and served Robert and his men.
As the leader of his people at the time, he could have any woman, and as many wives, that he pleased. Add network drivers to esxi 6 web. Robert favored a certain woman named Zyra, who he later took as his official wife. Though he had many wives, it was this woman that he deemed to be his official wife upon settling his nomadic tribe. Together they had a daughter named Paristasia who grew up to be a cunning warrior herself.
The daughter of the war-chief was most like her mother – a cunning young girl who was shy in public, but had a fierce heart. Growing up she shed that shyness with a passion for her people. Zyra was not keen on her daughter travelling with Robert and had her stay back in a village with her during the warmer seasons. She would not be without combat training as she grew up to be adequate with a bow and skillful with a short sword. Her mother could not keep her forever as she grew into a young woman and roamed into the woods and nearby villages that were near a half day’s ride by horse.
Following one of her usual routes through the woods, while Robert was off warring the Saxons, Paristasia met a travelling man named Devin. Devin was an orphan trickster and con man to high lords, but a gentle and hardworking soul to farmers and villagers. He greeted Paristasia and soon fell for her then and there. He inquired about work in the local villages, but there was nothing. He was on his way to hers. The discussion ended quickly after sharing their individual plans for the day and promised each other to meet later that night. During the time that Robert was away, Paristasia and Devin had a secret relationship that had developed into her to be with child at the age of seventeen.
Upon hearing this news, Zyra could not fully approve, but understood their relationship and had seen how dedicated they were to each other. She believed they would marry on Robert’s return.
Unfortunately, this changed five months later as Devin had left after hearing about the end of the warring in the north. Upon Robert’s return and hearing the news of Devin’s disappearance into the night, Zyra and Robert were furious and Paristasia quite upset. However, things were not what they seemed. On the night that Devin departed, Devin revealed the past his love did not know about. He had swindled wealthy men of their treasures and kept it all in one location. Every journey was hard, but it was a safe location where he could live his life in peace if he ever wished to stop. He persuaded the mother of his child to have them both be the precipice of his collection. Devin believed Robert would never understand, being a warrior. He felt he could not face the wrath of her father gathered from the stories.

“From what I heard, your father is one man I cannot lie to, even if he wasn’t our child’s grandfather,” Devin said. “I want to leave you this,” he pulled out a map of where to find him and his treasure and showed it to her under a dim candle. “In a few years time, I’ll be there with enough gold to last our family generations. I’ll make all of this up to you, I promise my dear Paris.”
He folded the map and stuffed it in a bag with a few other trinkets to remember him by.The two lovers kissed, Devin rubbed his pregnant lover’s belly and whispered something to the unborn child.Final farewells were given before Devin rode off into the night in one direction and Paristasia in the other.
Onward, to the Future
Almost two years passed since the war against the Saxons. Paristasia gave birth to a daughter whom she named Xenia. As the child grew, she fascinated her family with how quickly she picked things up.
Apart from his granddaughter’s upbringing, Robert grew restless. He was not used to home life, but he promised his wife, Zyra, that he’d assist the locals in expanding the community after the war. He was a nomad warrior like his ancestors and needed to fight. He wanted a challenge in his later years as he was well into his 40s.
Paristasia incepted the idea that she would like the family to move to a new home. One far away and near the coast. Zyra and Robert discussed moving the entire family and leaving the village altogether. Zyra was happy where she was, but wanted a permanent place for her family for her daughter to plant roots. Where they were living currently was suitable for farmers, but after hearing so many of her husband’s stories, she asked about castles and towers. She had never seen large structures. A gleam came to Robert’s eye. He would show her the world that he has seen and possibly experience new lands together. Though after many years of peace, he had helped his tribe become wealthy enough to where they could establish a town anywhere they wanted. Many were content on settling down where they currently were. Others still wanted to have that glory that came with sieging fiefdoms.

A council was held between Robert and three leading members of his tribe and the neighboring villages that had grown because of his tribe’s settlement.

The first member represented the farmers. He pleaded for Robert to reconsider leaving. Bountiful harvests have been reaped thanks to the numbers of men, women, and children he and his tribe have brought forth. It would be a shame to start all over again or not have enough to tend to the land for food and for the benefit of trade. There was also concern about having protection from raiders. The area has been safe for the most part thanks to Robert’s reputation.
The second member represented the local villagers who had set up shops and trades. He was a blacksmith who was proud to craft finer armor than his master was able to when growing up as an apprentice. He spoke how the villagers were divided in joining him. Distance was of high concern, but there was the promise of possible trade routes elsewhere and a plentiful source of materials to help with trading. The risk seemed to be worth the potential reward.

The third member was his second in command who assisted in hunting and fighting. He spoke of the glory that was had in the old days and how he longed for one last fight. He was younger than Robert, but just as eager as a green boy who wanted to lift a sword. The old warriors were weary and wanted to rest their bones and raise families. They did not mind the work and welcomed the peace. The young warriors did not know what to expect, but were hungry for adventure.
Robert adjourned the meeting and considered what each of them had to say. He felt it best to scout out a new land with a number of green boys that were fast on horseback to relay messages, a hundred or so soldiers, and a few farmers and tradesmen. There was the matter of what direction they would take. He could send scouts north, where it was familiar territory and branch out from there. They’d have to scale mountains or go around them depending on the time of year they decided to leave. West was a safe bet as it would then allow them to go north or south along the coast. South held fertile land. and was away from the mountains, but was quite open and heard to be populated. The same was with heading east, but it was known to be a heavily populated area and most likely to meet resistance amongst various lords. Also, it was unknown territory to Robert, but it was something that excited him and his men. Risk and potential danger would not win over a large number of soldiers he may require for takeover, especially for those who were still inexperienced.
It was decided that after the snows had melted, Robert would send out scouts for a month’s time in each direction. After a month, they’d report back and the council would again meet. Paristasia yearned for adventure and asked if she’d be allowed to be a scout, even though she’d have to leave young Xenia behind with Zyra. It didn’t take much convincing with her father. He had allowed it, but her mother protested. She believed Xenia was too young to be without her mother for long. Xenia, almost three years young now, herself picked up what was going on and believed a month or two was not too long as it was important for their future.
Mother and daughter said goodbyes on the day of, with tears in both their eyes, but courage in their hearts. Paristasia was granted to be the first to select the direction her scouts would go. Known only to her, Devin’s treasure trove and Devin himself were south of the village. Their family’s future would be secure. She had faith in Devin and herself. She promised to return shortly and with that, she was off with three of the toughest women in the village: Asis, Rennista, and Pluta.
